Reach Your Audience course by Mountain Software

Reach Your Audience teaches a practical way to think about the people on the receiving end of your work and what they need to do with it, so what you deliver is adapted to be understood, used, and acted on.

Why This Course Exists

It’s easy to recognize the feeling when you’re on the receiving end of someone else’s work.

Why did they do it this way?

I get what it does, but I don't get why it is built like this.

This technically works, but it is awkward to use.

That reaction usually shows up when work is created from one point of view and then handed to people who need to use it in a different context. The problem is not effort or ability. It is that how the work will be used matters before it is delivered.

Reach Your Audience exists because the same gap shows up on the producing side as well. Even solid work lands more cleanly when it is created with attention to how others will receive it, work with it, and use it.

What You'll Learn

You’ll learn how to recognize the different audiences your work reaches and how their needs affect what you deliver.

The course walks through how to think about what others need in order to understand and use your work, including context, level of detail, timing, and format. It shows how those considerations influence what you choose to include, emphasize, or leave out.

You’ll also learn how to position work so its intent is clearer, decisions are easier to make, and next steps are more obvious. That includes anticipating questions, highlighting what matters most, and reducing the amount of explanation required after delivery.

By the end of the course, your work will land more cleanly, require less clarification, and create a clearer path from delivery to action.

What's Included

Lessons are built along The Path to REACH Your Audience: Recognize your audience, Evaluate their needs, Adapt your delivery, Communicate clearly, and Highlight accomplishments.

The course uses concrete examples drawn from real software environments that you can use to adapt your conversations, written output, and code. You’ll see how the same work can land very differently depending on audience, context, and delivery.

Guided exercises and a workbook are used throughout the course to help you apply the ideas to your own audiences and active work. The workbook is designed to be revisited as roles change, projects evolve, and new stakeholders enter the picture.

Total runtime is a little over three and a half hours, including the introduction, wrap-up, and exercises. Lessons are designed to be completed in manageable segments and revisited when communication starts breaking down again.

Reach Your Audience is part of the Communication Skills pillar of the Mastering Software Developer Productivity series.

When work leaves people asking why is this built this way, progress slows through extra explanation and correction.

Reach Your Audience helps reduce that gap, so what you deliver makes sense on its own and supports what needs to happen next.
